Whole Home Audio Made Easy
Wireless speakers have been around for a while, but they have rarely offered a satisfactory, high quality solution. Older systems used radio frequency (RF) technology that was prone to interference and limited range. Sonos changed all that in 2002 with the introduction of their simple yet powerful wireless speakers. Their vision to “fill every home with music and make listening a valued experience again” is becoming a reality as many homes and businesses implement their products for a custom wireless audio solution.
How It Works
Sonos uses a secure, AES-encrypted, peer-to-peer wireless mesh network named SonosNet™. This network does not replace your existing Wi-Fi network but works alongside it. The innovative SonosNet design allows individual Sonos speakers to connect to each other by simply pushing a button. As you add more speakers to your home, the network is enlarged, providing you with whole house coverage. Expand your system up to 32 different rooms in the home. TECH TALK: All Sonos Speakers will communicate wirelessly to an existing 2.4GHz home network supporting 802.11b/g technology. You will need to hard-wire at least one Sonos speaker to your router if your network is only 56Hz or 802.11n.
Content is king with Sonos. They claim the ability to "Stream all the music on earth" with their product. Sonos can access music files from any computer on your home network and is compatible with iTunes. In Fact, users can play music from their iPod, iPad, or iPhone direct to their Sonos speaker without any wires or stream directly from Amazon Cloud Player. Sonos is compatible with a wide variety of music formats including MP3, AAC+, Apple Lossless, WAV, Amazon Cloud, WMA, iTunes, Audible, Flac and more.
In addition to music you own, there are a number of music services available once you own your Sonos gear. Many of these services are free, but some do require a fee.
Controlling your wireless system has never been easier with the free Sonos control app. Once downloaded to your PC, MAC, iPad, iPhone,iPod Touch, or Android device, users have complete control. After turning on a speaker, they can select from Sonos music services or play a song from their library. If multiple Sonos speakers are in the home, then each room works independently and can play different music. For those family gatherings or parties, users can link all zones so all Sonos speakers will play the same content without delay or echo.

This component does not have an amplifier or speaker connections and is designed to work with an existing amplifier or home theater system. It does have an auxiliary input, however.
