Subwoofer Buying Guide

Subwoofers are an absolute must for any modern sound system

Home Theaters fall flat without a Subwoofer! Whether you're rockin' out at home or watching a movie, today's theater experience just doesn't sound the same without the deep bass that only a subwoofer can produce.

A subwoofer is a large speaker that produces sound within the 20-2000 Hz range, designed to enhance the performance of a sound system's main speakers. Movies come alive, with music gaining an "in-concert feel".
There are a few things to consider before making a subwoofer purchase, mostly involving cost, usage, and style. When subwoofers were first developed in the 1960s, they were far too expensive for typical consumers. Fortunately for today's consumers, there is a subwoofer for every application that won't break the bank. With budgets aside, determine where the subwoofer will be used the most as the best subwoofer for the job depends if it is being used in the home or car. What type of sounds will the subwoofer be producing the most? Where will it be placed? Will the subwoofer be added to a pre-existing setup or a new purchase?
The right subwoofer for augmenting a PA system, for example, may not be suitable for a hip hop DJ. A public speaker may need to buy a mid-sized, powered subwoofer for an existing system. Powered subwoofers are subwoofers that come with built-in amplifiers to power their sound. A DJ, on the other hand, may be making a custom setup for a new nightclub, choosing larger passive speakers that will be powered by the nightclub's high-end amplifiers.
